Litter and Empty Beer Cans on Rural Newton Roads

Postby JoeP » Thu Apr 06, 2006 7:55 pm

Walking along Beaver Pond Road, it's not hard to miss the many empty beer cans laying on the side of the road.  I would estimate from the mile plus I walk a few times a week, there is at least 50 to 60 empties, perhaps more.  I, and some other residents, will be cleaning them up within the next several days as the weather gets warmer.

Aside from the littering aspect, one has to wonder where all these empties are coming from.  I would assume most adults would know better not to drink and fling empties from their car.  Therefore should we assume the empties littering the roadside are from underage drinkers?  While hopefully not true, this leads me to ask the following questions;

1. Is someone illegally supplying alcohol to underage drinkers?

2. Are area teenagers driving around consuming alcohol?

3. How bad of a problem is this - are other rural roads in Newton having a similar experience?

4. Finally, I thought the South Abington police were patrolling Newton.  Perhaps they should travel more on the rural roads to discourage this.  I haven't seen them on Beaver Pond so to borrow a line from an old TV show - "car 51 where are you?".

Underage drinking and drinking in an automobile is no longer "kid stuff".  It's deadly stuff.

I would like to hear what observations other Newton residents have regarding the litter issue, underage drinking, and/or police coverage (or lack thereof).

Thanks.

Joe,
I agree with you about the litter situation, it is a disgrace, but unfortunatley it's not just here in Newton.
The litter is not just along the roads either. We were just up on top of our property, the peak of Bald Mountain, and picked up plenty of litter, especially beer cans.
I doubt all the beer cans are from underage drinkers. There are plenty of ignorant adults that litter too. The problem is catching them. It's not likely they will tos something if they see the lights of another vehicle near.
