Fire Whistle is Too Loud

At Monday’s supervisors meeting, Newton Township Resident Wilber Waltz complained that the Newton Ransom Fire Company needlessly sounds the fire alarm.
Mr. Waltz has been keeping track of how often the alarm sounds and how often it goes off more than once and he feels that with everyone having cell phones and pagers that the alarm is just an unneeded nuisance.
Fire company volunteers defended the siren saying that it was an important backup system and that the siren is not used between 11 PM and 6 or 7 AM so that most people are not disturbed while sleeping.
Mr. Waltz countered that the fact that they do not need it at night, and the other times when the siren was broken and not working shows that they really do not need it at all.
The alarm also goes off at 12 PM and 6 PM but the only reason given for that was that other fire companies do the same thing.
The dialogue ended with an agreement that there would be more discussion and that maybe the siren could be sounded once for a longer period instead of twice for a short period.
